Bisphenol A (BPA) and Bisphenol S (BPS) are both chemical compounds used in the production of hard plastics. BPA was first used in the 1950s, but after considerable research, it was revealed in 2007 that BPA had a negative effect on health. BPS was then quickly introduced to eliminate the problem. Further studies were then conducted and BPS was also found to adversely affect human health in a similar way (1). Plastics at home, even the ‘BPA-Free’ plastics, may still contain BPS.
Which Products Contain BPA/BPS?
When BPA and BPS plastics come into contact with food or liquid, chemicals from the plastics can be released. These chemicals then enter our bodies through consumption. The release of BPA or BPS is substantially greater when the plastic is heated.
BPA and BPS can be found in most
kitchenware plastics including food containers, plastic cups, food packaging,
inner lining of cans, water bottles, plastic bottle caps and all other hard
plastics. It can also be found in thermal receipt paper, contact lenses,
eyeglass lenses, compact discs, water pipes, toiletries and dental
What is most alarming is that BPA and BPS can be found in most baby products like baby bottles, sippy cups, formula packaging and toys. After 60 years of babies being exposed to BPA, the FDA, in 2012, finally acted, banning the use of BPA in all baby products. However, this small step only gave way to other similar chemicals being used like BPS and Bisphenol F (BPF) (2).
BPA/BPS and Human Health
Extensive research has revealed that BPA and its substitutes, like BPS, can negatively affect the human body. It can also directly affect infants, hormones and the metabolism.
Infants and Children
In 2010, it was discovered that BPA and BPS can penetrate the placenta, thus affecting the growth and development of unborn infants. Both Canadian and Chinese scientists found BPS or BPA in the urine of 80% of infants across China, USA and six other countries. These two chemicals can affect the child’s hormonal balance, growth and physiological functions (3).
BPA and BPS can cause a number of endocrine disorders. The endocrine system
is involved in the regulation of hormones, mood, growth, development tissue function, metabolism
and reproduction (4).
BPA and BPS can mimic naturally occurring human hormones, which produces the over-stimulation or under-stimulation of hormones. These two chemicals can negatively affect male and female fertility, early puberty, stress, hormonal tumours, breast and prostate cancer, as well as, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)(5). However, these health problems are just the tip of the iceberg. As more research is done, the results are showing more ways that BPA and BPS are causing illnesses.
Obesity and Diabetes
BPA and BPS can also be closely linked to obesity and diabetes. A study conducted by Health Canada showed that the body does not successfully metabolize or excrete BPA and BPS. Instead, these substances promote the growth of fat cells, as well as, alter the amount of fat inside each cell (6).
How To Know If Your Products Are BPA/BPS Free?
If you want complete reassurance that your products are BPA or BPS free, you should avoid using plastic. Another option could be switching all of your kitchenware to glass or ceramic. Plastic containers can be used for items that are not consumable and your food or drinks should be stored in glass containers instead. Stainless steel
bottles can also be used for liquids.
The second best way to ensure your products are BPA or BPS free is to do your research. Health conscious companies will label their products BPA, BPS, and BPF free. Read and research about the materials used in making the product. Plastics also have a number to indicate the type of plastic. 1, 2, 4, and 5 are safer plastics to use with foods and liquids. 3 and 7 should be avoided and 6 is polystyrene, which should also be avoided (7).
